Erosion created the chimney rock wonders of nature in this central area of Turkey and early people constructed large underground cities for thousands of people for protection in the volcanic rock. The earliest records of Cappadocia date back to the 6th century BC and the area is mentioned in the Bible. Early Christians escaped Roman persecution by hiding in this area and building their early churches inside the hollowed out caves and underground caverns.
