Our giude said rees painted white to protect against termites. The original people of Jamaica, the Tainos, were never the same after the arrival of the Spanish. They provided the labor and food for the new settlement of New Seville. Many died because of the diseases brought by the Spanish. Many were just killed or committed suicide. Econnomic, social and religious system were destroyed. The Spanish hopes of finding gold were never realized and the Tainos were forced to work for the Spanish. In an effort to convert the Tainos monmistaries were constructed and educationo of the local people took place there.
